Police release pictures of Mas Selamat's attire

SINGAPORE: Police have released pictures of what Jemaah Islamiyah leader, Mas Selamat Kastari, might have been wearing when he escaped from the Whitley Detention Centre on Wednesday.

Mas Selamat had with him the prescribed attire of the detention centre – a pair of rubber slippers, brown trousers and beige round-collared t-shirt.

After an accounting of his personal belongings, police believe that Mas Selamat also has with him, a greenish-grey, loose-fitting, round-necked shirt known as the baju kurong.

Police believe Mas Selamat is likely to have changed out of the detention centre attire, and anyone who has seen the discarded clothes and slippers should call 999 immediately.

So far, police have received 600 phone calls and 170 emails related to Mas Selamat's escape.

Mas Selamat escaped last Wednesday from the Whitley Road Detention Centre.

He had been held under the Internal Security Act since 2006, for involvement in a plot to crash a hijacked plane into Changi Airport.

The Singapore JI leader slipped out of the detention centre while being brought to meet his family.

Singapore authorities say they strongly believe Mas Selamat is still in the country because he escaped un-aided, and has no means to leave the country.

Apart from keeping a look-out for the fugitive who has an observable limp in his left leg when running or walking briskly, Singaporeans have been told to report any stolen items such as money, food, clothes or transport.

A SingPost van reported stolen earlier at the Woodlands Civic Centre has since been recovered and police believe it was not linked to the escape of Mas Selamat.

The police who describe Mas Selamat as a trained vehicle mechanic who knows how to operate motorised boats, say he is more likely to active at night.

The search for the JI fugitive is continuing in various parts of Singapore, and a close watch is being kept on wooded areas where he could hide as well as parts of the island where Mas Selamat can try to leave the country.
